My introduction to business analysis and process improvement was over twenty years ago when, as an electronics engineer in a GE plant, I received training in the Workout(™) process improvement methodology. Since then, my knowledge and understanding has steadily increased as I learn how to analyse and improve business processes in the simplest and most sustainable way.

I think it is important to be able to recognize the type of question you are being asked so you can arrive at the correct answer to that question.

Knowledge questions test your ability to know specific facts and recall information that you have learned. This information may be straight from the BABOK® Guide, or it may be something you have learned from another source or your own experience as a business analyst. I just finished another application writing session for the IIBA Phoenix chapter. It was a good exchange, with many challenging questions.
First of all, nearly everyone preparing for the CBAP questions the BABOK® and how it may or may not be “real life.” What I tell people is that everything in the BABOK is somebody’s real life! That may or may not be a comfort, but it does put it in perspective.

I had completed my application way back in September but hadn’t been able to find an exam sitting date that I felt would give me enough time to study. I finally decided in December that I would never find the perfect time so I set the date for early February and told myself I’d find a way to make it happen.

The path toward CBAP® certification is very very challenging, and rightfully so. After all, as a collective, we wouldn't want someone misrepresenting our profession and giving us all CBAP® a bad name. I believe it's safe to say that it's important that IIBA® makes the certification process challenging. Not to compare Business Analyst to other professions, but imagine going to a doctor knowing that the medical industry didn't rigorously challenge their professional. Sounds scary doesn't it. Well as a BA, we may not be responsible of people's lives, but we are in part responsible for their finances. What happens when a project fails? Or an application gets shelved after the sponsors have spent millions of dollars building it? ...etc Bottom line, loss of money is what we are talking about. And this can cause a lot of turmoil in someone's life.
